DOES COFFEE TRIGGER ACNE?

If you are anything like the rest of us, you rely on this little beauty to get you through the day (or at least make us feel like we can), of course I am talking about COFFEE. Latte, cappuccino, flat white, macchiato... oh, it comes in so many wonderful forms and is the only thing that can make us feel like wonder woman. But, have you heard of the saying, too much of a good thing can be bad for you? Well, I have often wondered whether our pick-me-up could be causing more damage than we think.

 

PROBLEM – DEHYDRATION

Coffee has caffeine and caffeine can cause dehydration in our body. It’s the build up of toxic that can cause havoc with our skin, as well as redness and premature aging.

 

CURE

We are all aware that coffee can sometimes work as a laxative, which means we need enough water to flush our system. Make sure you are drinking your recommended intake.

 

PROBLEM – DAIRY

It’s no secret that dairy can cause acne to flare up, milk contains components related to testosterone that may stimulate oil glands in the skin, and can effect the production of sebum.

 

CURE

You don’t want acne, but then you also don’t fancy your coffee black, we get it. Luckily, there are many amazing dairy alternatives on the market! Most coffee shops will have almond milk, coconut milk and soya milk available as a substitute.

 

PROBLEM – SUGAR

I can’t tell you how many times I have wanted to interrupt someone pouring sugar into their coffee, like seriously, do you want any coffee with that sugar?? Sugar causes dehydration, acne and glycation, which results in inflammation and premature aging. Aside from the lovely taste, sugar is doing you no favours.

 

CURE

THROW THE SUGAR AWAY. Okay, I’m joking, kinda. My best advice is to wean yourself off of sugar, I also had to do this. I started with 2 tsp of sugar in my coffee, then 1 ½, then 1, then half a tsp, until the difference between the half a tsp and nothing was so minimal I couldn’t even tell the difference.

 

It’s all about balance and moderation. Try to limit how often you drink coffee, I allow myself one cup a day and that’s enough to pick me up midday. Instead of reaching for your coffee first thing in the morning, try something different; I have a peppermint tea instead. You could always try green tea, a matcha latte or even decaf coffee! Overall, the caffeine, dairy and sugar can age your skin and cause problems so listen to your body and try to drink more water and remember: less is more.
