Why you should eat your greens! (+ recipe)

Now, we have all heard the saying “make sure you eat your greens”, but why exactly is this? Let me tell you!
 

There are many reasons as to why greens should be a part of your daily diet. For example, leafy greens are rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids, which are crucial in any inflammation-fighting diet. They also have a high fibre content, which is essential for colon health. Now for all of you that are concerned about wrinkles, the high vitamin and mineral content of greens can also help support the health of our skin.
 
Want to know some fun ways to eat your greens? I love adding them to smoothies, especially kale and spinach. You can also use them in soups, green juices and salads. My favourite smoothie recipe:
 
Banana and kale smoothie (serves 1)
 
  •  80ml unsweetened almond milk
  •  80g spinach
  •  100g kale leaves
  •  140g ice
  •  1/2 banana
  •  10g almonds
  • 1 tbsp flaxseeds
 
Blend ingredients until smooth.

 
My top 3 favourite greens + the benefits:
 
Asparagus
 

Asparagus has high levels of potassium, which helps control blood pressure and iron which boost the body’s immune system. It is high in dietary fibre, folic acid and vitamin A.
 
Broccoli
 

Broccoli contains more vitamin C than an orange and contains as much calcium as a glass of milk; Calcium helps to keep your heart beating regularly and also promotes sleep.
 
Spinach
 
Spinach is high in niacin and zinc, as well as protein and fibre. It is packed with tons of nutrients that are important for skin, hair and bone health. It was Popeye’s favourite for a reason!
